— For several members of the Decatur football team, Thursday night’s scrimmage at Berryville was their first football action in more than a year.

First-year varsity coach Stanley Ellis saw several bright spots in the scrimmage.

“Overall I was pleased with the starters,” Ellis said. “We substituted liberally and played everyone so we lacked a little consistency. The main thing is that everyone played and we got a chance to see a lot of kids.”

The Bulldogs have settled on a quarterback with sophomore Evan Owensearning the job. Ellis said the backfield starters - Brian Cox and Mitchell Perry - also played well.

The Bulldogs do not have a Week 1 opponent, but Ellis said the team played the Gentry junior varsity on Monday, prior to the junior high game at 7.

Decatur’s first game will be Sept. 10 at Hartford.
