— Mother nature had other plans for Colcord’s season-opening football game against Gentry on Thursday.

Gentry was leading 6-0 in the middle of the second quarter Thursday when the game was postponed to Friday because of thunderstorms.

When the game resumed on Friday, it didn’t get much better for the Hornets. They lost 12-6.

Gentry scored on a 97-yard drive in the third quarter to take a 12-0 lead on a Justin Stewart touchdown reception from Austin Millsap. The pass was Gilbert’s second of the game, having hit Kevin Scherer for a three-yard pass in the Thursday portion of the game.

The Pioneers kicked off and Colcord’s Austin Gilbert returned it near midfield, giving the Hornets a spark that would result in their only score in the twoday contest.

The Hornets (0-1) drove 50 yards for a score on a combination of passes from Canaan Sherrell and runs from Sherrell and Chris Aguilar. Sherrell scored from one yard out to make it 12-6.

The fourth quarter turned into a defensive battle. The Hornets were able to move the ball several times but unable to produce any more points.

“I feel terrible for the kids.

(I) feel like they played hard and well enough to win, but that's football,” said head coach Bud Simmons. “Few penalties here and there can cost you the game. This wasa good game to prepare us for the tough district.”

Sherrell rushed for 69 yards on 13 carries, while completing 8 of 19 passes for 88 yards. Rusty James had four catches for 56 yards.
