— The Decatur Junior High Boys track team placed second overall in the Eureka Highlander Relay Cornerstone Bank Classic on April 4.

The boys competed against roughly 20 area teams, including some from larger schools such as Bentonville’s Lincoln and Kirksey Middle Schools, according to coach Stan Ellis.

The Decatur team scored 102 points at the track meet, a close second place to Elkins’ 107 points. Scores ranged all the way down to the single digits, Ellis said.

The junior high team competed in a total of 16 events. Team members had to be in the top eight of each event - some of which had as many as 40 competitors - in order to score, Ellis said.

Some highlights included Mario Urquidi’s first place in the high jump and tie for first place in the pole vaulting event, Steven Buckmaster’s first place win in the 400 meter event, Trey Kell’s second place in the mile, 800 meter and 1600 meter events and Victor Urquidi’ssecond place in the high jump and 200 meter event.

The team also won numerous other awards, Ellis said.
