LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Editor,

I just wanted to say thanks for the article (Wed., July 27 edition) on the old white gymnasium in Sulphur Springs.

It is special to me because my father (Milton Honderich) built it, or rather re-assembled it after it had been disassembled from Camp Crowder.

At the time, the property it is on used to be John Brown Academy. John Brown Senior hired my dad to rebuild it and then went on to build many of the buildings at John Brown University in Siloam Springs.

He would be very pleased to know it may end up on the historic registry.

Editor,

Has it come to anyone else’s attention how absurd the kid’s school supply lists have become in our area? It especially seems that way in the Decatur area where folks worked so hard to save our school in the first place!

In our opinion, most of us around here are just working-class folks who, especially in these times when the main concern is keeping a roof overhead and groceries in the house, can’t un derstand why little Jack and Jill need 30 or 40 pencils, or eight notebooks, and also two reams of copy paper be cause the elementary school doesn’t even have text books and must copy everything needed for homework and class lessons!

While we were renewing car tags the other day at revenue office, we couldn help noticing the big sign the wall stating that 80 per cent of our taxes are used schools. Kind of gives you warm and fuzzy feeling over, doesn’t it?
