— After weeks of sweltering heat and drought conditions, Mother Nature smiled on Gravette for the city’s 118th birthday party last week.

Rain postponed the turkey shoot, and lack of participants caused cancellation of the singing competition, the swim meet and the poker run. Craft fair participants were moved to Kindley Park, and the softball tournament finals were postponed because of wet fields. Other activities, including a half-hourlong parade, were enjoyed by crowds in the cooler, pleasant weather.

The celebration was sponsored by the Greater Gravette Chamber of Commerce and planning for Gravette’s 119th birthday celebration next August may already be taking shape.
