“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” Psalm 119:130 (Read verses129-136)

We live in a dark and sinful world in which the true and right way is so often clouded and hidden from sight. Every type of sin and evil lifestyle is becoming more and more acceptable. Killing of the unborn is justified. Lying, cheating and stealing are commonplace. And, reshaping our ideas about God to fit our decaying morals is almost universal! Ah, but “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”

God’s Word is like a light shining in a dark place. It reveals the dirt and the decay, but it also shows the right way. When we read the Bible or hear it read and taught in its truth and purity, it will show us all our sins and erring ways. (Instead of coming to this light, we would often rather scurry away, back into darkness, to avoid facing the truth about our sinfulness in God’s eyes.) But God’s Word also reveals the right way - the way of truth - telling us of forgiveness of sins and life eternal through faith in Jesus Christ and His atoning sacrifice for us upon the cross. God’s Word shows our utter sinfulness and impurity before God and our need for repentance; but it also shows us how our sin and guilt is cleansed away in the blood of Jesus, making us righteous and holy in God’s eyes; and it shows us how God would have us live as His children in this world.

O Holy Spirit, shine upon my heart by means of Your Word. Move me to read and hear the Holy Scriptures, and give me understanding that I might see and repent of my sinful ways and trust in Jesus Christ and His shed blood for forgiveness and the cleansing of my soul. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
