— The first ever science night at Decatur Northside Elementary School on Feb. 15 transformed the school cafeteria into an interactive science museum.

Classes, from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade, created educational displays focusing on a wide range of topics such as sound waves, static electricity, recycling, batteries and volcanoes.

Science night had to be rescheduled twice because of snow but the weather and short notice didn’t seem to hurt attendance. The school cafeteria, which doubles as an auditorium, was packed as parents and children gathered around each exhibit to discover and explore together. Teachers estimated that more than 115 parents plus students, siblings and extended family members attended the event.

Dinora Regalado, the mother of a third grade student, said she enjoyed attending the event with her children

Fourth grade teacher Linsay McEuen said all the students worked extremely hard on their projects and were proud to show them off to their parents and fellow students. Even though they weren’t required to help with the displays, many students chose to stay near their projects and give demonstrations.

“They were actually experimenting together,” she said.
