Storm sirens being tested

New Year's Eve tornado prompts testing of local warning systems

— Although tornados are not common during winter months they can occur as happened Dec. 31 when the small town of Cincinnati in Washington County was struck by a pre-dawn tornado which took the lives of three people in the storm's deadly path.

Several homes in south central Benton County were also damaged by the twister. The entire two county area was under a tornado-warning advisory.

A test of Gravette’s storm/tornado warning sirens will be conducted this Wednesday, Jan. 5, at noon, weather permitting. The sirens are tested at noon on the first Wednesday of each month at the noon hour.

Gentry’s tornado sirens were tested Monday, with one near the schools not functioning properly. Plans were in place to fix the problem so all sirens are fully operational.
