Parking limits less strict than thought

Ordinance found which removes time limits for parking on cross streets

— Parking restrictions found by the police department for side streets crossing Main Street are not as strict as first thought, with an amending ordinance discovered already on the books.

Due to a complaint filed with the Gentry Police Department and enforcement issues, an ordinance provision restricting parking on portions of Main Street and on a number of cross streets between Main Street and its alleys to two hours was brought to the council at its Jan. 3 meeting. The ordinance set twohour parking limits not only on Main Street, but on cross streets between Collins and Otis Streets from Main Street to the alleyways on the north and south side of Main Street which applied 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

Since that meeting, a second ordinance, amending the above ordinance was found on the books which removed the twohour restrictions on all but Main Street. The amending ordinance alleviated the concerns of the council and business owners about parking near Main Street businesses, but some have mentioned the possibility of another amending ordinance to change the two-hour limit on Main Street as well.

The matter may still be on the agenda for February’s meeting.
