Gentry beats Gravette in OT

Gentry teams lose to Shiloh Christian in rescheduled games.

— The Pioneers picked up a twopoint victory over the Lions in overtime on Jan. 19.

The game was a close match throughout, with Gentry jumping ahead by four in the first quarter but finishing the half only a basket ahead, 21-19.

Both Gentry and Gravette teams had a strong third quarter, picking up 20 points apiece. In the fourth, the Lions closed the gap, finishing regular play time at 49 each.

In overtime play, Gentry managed to pick up nine points to Gravette’s seven to win the conference game 58-56.

Gentry’s Kevin Scherer scored four points in overtime, including the goahead basket, as Gentry edged out host Gravette. Scherer had 24 points in the game. Joe Morris added 14 for Gentry, and Justin Bryant another 10.

Cody Montee led Gravette with 19 points.

GIRLS - The spread in the score between the Lady Pioneers and Lady Lions wasn’t much greater, with Gentry taking home the conference win, 39-34.

Though Gravette held pace in the opening quarter, being down only 8-9, Gentry built up a threepoint lead in the second and a nine-point lead by the end of the third.

Gravette attempted a comeback in the final quarter, picking up 11 points to Gentry’s seven, but it wasn’t enough.

Loren Cripps scored 10 points as visiting Gentry held off Gravette, Courtney Millsap and Terra Jones each added another nine.

Samantha Vanotterloo led Gravette with 14 points, and Shelby Newell had 13.

Gentry v. Shiloh

GENTRY - Both the boys’ and girls’ teams suffered defeats in conference games against visiting Shiloh Christian on Saturday - the game was rescheduled due to snow and days off earlier in the week.

The Gentry Pioneers lost to the Saints 66-54, with Shiloh players Darian Harris and David Matthews scoring 17 points each as Shiloh Christian overpowered Gentry in a 1-4A Conference game. Chris Oliver added 13 points for the Saints, and Taylor Thompson had 11.

Gentry played a strong first quarter against Shiloh Christian, being down only one point at the buzzer, but that deficit grew in the second and became too much to overcome at the end of the third quarter, with the Pioneers down 29-45. The Pioneers narrowed the lead slightly in the final quarter, picking up 24 points to Shiloh’s 21.

Joe Morris led Gentry with a game-high 23 points. Kevin Scherer added 10 points and Austin Millsap 9.

GIRLS - Lindsey Roe and Meagan Henley scored 15 points each to lead Shiloh Christian past Gentry, 44-30, in 1-4A Conference Play at Gentry. Hannah Persing added eight points for the Lady Saints.

Tera Jones paced Gentry with 15 points. Loren Cripps added another five, with Courtney Millsap and Kendra Boyd adding four points each.

The Lady Pioneers trailed the Lady Saints throughout the game, with the third quarter being the brightest spot for the Gentry girls.

Gentry was to take on Pea Ridge on Tuesday night after press time. The Farmington at Gentry basketball games scheduled for Friday night, Jan. 21, will be played at Gentry on Thursday, Jan. 27, beginning with the varsity girls at 6 p.m., followed by varsity boys. The wrestling match scheduled for Jan. 27 at Gentry will be held in the Carl Gym.

Gentry's junior high basketball teams are scheduled to be at Gravette on Thursday, Jan. 27. The junior high basketball games scheduled for last Thursday, Jan. 20, against Farmington, will not be made up, according to the Gentry School District Web site.
