Mowing yards required by city

— With the arrival of summer weather, vegetation continues to grow quickly around town in Gravette and Mayor Byron Warren reminds property owners within the city limits to keep their yards mowed.

A city ordinance, passed in 2008, states, “All yards are to be properly maintained to avoid the unsanitary accumulation of trash and garbage and to avoid being overrun by weeds or high grass, higher than eight inches tall.”

While this ordinance does not include any agriculturallands under cultivation in the city or lands that have never been platted and/or subdivided, “It is in the best interests for public health and for economic development to keep all other properties properly maintained.

“Keeping lawns trimmed helps make Gravette an attractive place to live and helps us all develop pride in being residents of our city,” the mayor added.

The above ordinance permits the city to send letters of notification to property owners followed by a cleanup charge of $100 if the city has to clean up the property. Furthermore if the fees arenot paid, a “clean-up lien” will be filed though the office of the city attorney.

Because the city must first determine the legal owner of a property and follow notification procedures, the process can take considerable time to complete.

For information or to read the specific ordinance, contact city hall at 787-5757, ext. 4, or visit the city website at www.cityofgravette-ar.gov and click on ordinances.

“By all of us working together, we can make Gravette an even more attractive city. The cooperation of everyone is greatly appreciated,” the mayor said.
