— On July 2 Jayme Burden of Decatur climbed onto a bus in Little Rock, along with nine other members from the Benton County 4-H program and multiple other 4-H members from across the state, to attend the National Citizenship Washington Focus Program in Washington D.C.

Their itinerary included touring the National Mall area, visiting the Smithsonian and attending the Fourth of July Celebration at the Capitol. They visited Mount Vernon, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans and Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson Monuments, and the World War II Memorial.

The group also saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington NationalCemetery. They visited the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the National Cathedral.

The club members spent a day at the Capitol, took a personal tour of the building, attended the Senate and House of Representatives and met their own state representatives.

The travelers attended workshops to understand how bills become laws and even got to write their own “bills” and either pass or fail them in a mock congressional session at the end of the week.

They wrapped up the week with a dance and returned to Little Rock July 9.
