Mexican restaurant opens to meet need in Decatur

— Delicious smells waft out of a small food vending trailer in the parking lot just off Main Street in Decatur as customers begin to line up for lunch.

Owner Sandra Hernandez greets customers out of the window with a shy but gracious grin and serves fresh, made-from-scratch food wrapped up to go.

Tavitos Taqueria is Decatur's newest and only Mexican restaurant and offers fresh tacos, burritos, tortillas, quesadillas and shrimp cocktail.

Sandra and her business partner Marco Hernandez decided to open the restaurant in Decatur because there are no other Mexican restaurants in town.

Sandra has an inherent love of cooking and has worked in the restaurant business for the past 14 years.

“I’ve been working all my life in the restaurant business and I thought it’s time to start my own business,” she said.

In the future, Sandra said she would like to expand her menu and her restaurant, but for now she is starting small and is already keeping busy.

The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Customers can call ahead to place orders at 899-2959 or just stop by the window.
