Centerton to provide trash service April 1

— The Centerton City Council, at its Feb. 15 meeting, authorized Mayor Bill Edwards and the city recorder to enter into a contract with Waste Management to provide trash service to Centerton residents beginning on April 1.

Edwards said he will be sending a letter to city residents outlining the pickup dates and also to let everyone know that 96-gallon trash containers, as well as recycle carts, will be provided. For those with smaller amounts of trash and not needing regular pickup, yellow bags will be available for purchase at city hall, he said.

Edwards asked the council for permission to place a memorial bench on the city’s walking trail in honor of Michael Savard, who died while jogging on the trail in November of 2010. Edwards said there would be no cost to the city to install or purchase the bench because the family raised funds for the project. Jack Savard, Michael’s father, also addressed the council and asked permission to place a memorial stone at the site. Edwards said he would work with the family and present the final plans at the next council meeting for approval.

According to a financial statement presented by Edwards, the city had received 14 percent of its annual revenues and spent nine percent. Edwards said the city normally has some large expenditures in the first two months of the year.

The council appointed Matthew Horton to the planning commission to fill a vacancy created by Rick Hudson, when he accepted a full-time position with the city. Two members of the Centerton Advertising and Promotion Committee were also approved, Sherrie Stough and Teresa Weaver.

A resolution presented to the council to name a proposed sports park after former Mayor Bobbie Griffith was defeated. The council decided to name the park at a later time.

City police chief Lance Johnson reported that he was in the process of hiring another officer and should have that done by the next March council meeting. He also said his department would need a larger facility in the future, due to growth.

Street superintendent Rick Hudson updated the council on the progress of the new street department building which will be located on Highway 72. He said he hopes to move into the facility within the next 30 days.

Information for the above report was provided to the Westside Eagle Observer by Centerton Mayor Bill Edwards.
