Eagle Observer LETTER TO THE EDITOR

— I would like to commend the city of Gravette on providing permanent recycling trailers. I’m sure there is a cost involved for the city but it is a great service, a needed service, but above all, the right thing to do. I wish Congress were as willing to do what’s right as the city of Gravette.

I was informed the other morning on my way to work (radio news). I still prefer newspapers and radio to TV news for many reasons (one being because with TV news you never hear about a lot that is going on in our own country). Radio tends to give you the rest of the story and not just the media owner’s personal opinions, or the “let us entertain you” type news. And, of course, newspapers are still the best because, among several reasons, my favorite is it’s actually written word that you can refer back to if you’re not sure what you heard or thought you heard someone say.

So, from the radio news, I learned that this present Congress doesn’t like the biodegradable, made-in-the-USA utensils currently being used in the Congressional cafeteria. They claim they are not strong enough to cut, slice, dice or adequately get the food to its intended destination from the biodegradable, made-in-the-USA plate. And, apparently, the biodegradable, made-in-the-USA coffee cups still feel hot when holding them, so some have to use two cups (one inside the other) for their coffee. (I should be fair and mention that some probably drink hot chocolate.) So they want to go back to the nonbiodegradable plastic that ends up in the landfills for2000 years.

Someone did suggest maybe going back to using real silverware and coffee cups that you can actually use and wash them and - what an original idea - use them again! But for all I know, thatactually might save the taxpayers’ money.

So, I would say to Congress, take a lesson from Gravette and do the right thing and at the same time help create more jobs and hire some dishwashers. Did I mention my son needs a summer job?
