Storm sirens to be placed

— Storm sirens were to be placed in Springtown and should be operational yet this month, according to draft minutes of the March 15 Springtown Council meeting.

Mayor Paul Lemke reported to the council that an electrician would be wiring the town's yard shed to bring power to the storm sirens on March 16. The pole to hold the sirens was to be set by a crane coming from Centerton, Lemke said. According to draft minutes, power to the yard shed would cost the city $26 per month. Lemke hoped to have the sirens fully operational and ready for a test in April.

The sirens, according to the town's Web site, were donated by Pine Bluff.

According to Lemke’s report, he and Jim Cox would have the code to activate the sirens. The two, according to draft minutes, recently attended training from the National Weather Service to ready them for their new responsibility.

Lemke told the council he had requested to be notified by the McKee Foods weather tracking system when severe weather isapproaching. He said he would also look into obtaining grant money for the purchase of weather radios to be provided to the town's residents, according to draft minutes.

A new Web site is now up and online for the town's residents to help keep them informed of town activities and government meetings and decisions. The Web site address is: www.sites.google.com/ site/springtownarkansas. Available on the site are: a letter from Lemke; names and contact information for the town's elected officials; council meeting minutes and agendas, with agendas posted a week prior to the town's meetings; and photos from the town's annual barbecue celebration.

The town's annual barbecue was set for June 25, according to draft minutes. Don Early will be responsible to obtain the chicken, beans and grill. The park committee will procure other food items, arrange for a band and solicit donations for drawings. Electrical outlets and water in the park were suggested by Lemke. He and Lisa Lawrence will follow up on the improvements, according to the draft minutes.
