— Members of the Gravette High School Culinary Arts Class placed second in Arkansas’ state competition held recently in Little Rock.

The students, Jacob Scott, Megan Galvan and Victor Vang, prepared a three-course meal using only two butane heaters, said their instructor, Seanne Sain. Their meal consisted of fresh Tamaki sushi, curried lamb chops and a Pummelo agar-agar dessert.

“The dishes served not only to display their cooking skills, but technical skills in the kitchen. Learning how to prepare the dishes,” Sain explained, “the students gained knowledge on many cutting-edge kitchen techniques, including molecular gastronomy, which theyused to make sauce pearls for the sushi and the agar-agar Jello for their dessert.”

The three combined to receive more than $15,000 in scholarships, Sain said. She will be taking a team of students to an FCCLA National Culinary Arts competition in Anaheim, Calif., in July.

The team will be raising funds for the trip by preparing a dinner to be served before the production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Performing Arts Center on April 9. Tickets for the dinner and the play can be purchased at area banks and at pharmacies in Gravette.
