Decatur pool to open on May 31

— Repairs on the Decatur swimming pool are complete and it is set to open on May 31, Mayor Charles Linam told the council at Monday’s meeting.

The Decatur pool has been closed since the summer of 2008.

Linam presented the council with proposed hours of operation and prices for admission at the meeting. The pool will be open from noon until 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and will stay open until 8 p.m. on Thursday for family night.

Adult admission will be $3 and children’s admission will be $2.

There are five lifeguards in training, city administrative assistant Kim Wilkins said.

Decatur is working with the Gravette swimming pool to hire Red Cross certified instructors to teach lessons. Gravette isplanning to offer a morning class and Decatur is looking at the possibilityof offering an evening class, she said.

Council members agreed that offering swimming lessons may be the key to getting the community more involved with the pool. Linam urged the council members and community to support the pool.

“If we don’t get a significant increase in usage I won’t be able to come back and ask you to reopen it next year,” said Linam.

A free family fun day is planned for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 4.

In other business Linam reported he will be presenting a proposal to the school board to get three pieces of playground equipment from the old elementary school for Veterans Park.

The playground equipment has been unused since students in kindergarten through sixth grade have been moved to Northside Elementary School.
