Maysville E.H. Club meets to learn about home-grown eating

— The Maysville E. H. Club met at the Maysville Community Center April 28 with 10 members present. President Orpha Wardlaw called the meeting to order. Melinda Crawley led the group singing “My Blue Heaven.” After the pledge to the flag, Jewel Lukens gave an inspirational reading entitled “God’s Key.”

Gwen Singleton gave a lesson on Home-grown Eating. She noted there are six sustainable reasons to eat locally-grown food: 1) Quality - Foodis usually picked at peak ripeness; 2) Health - Chronic diseases are related to poor diet and lack of physical activity; 3) Safety - Knowing where your food comes from can mean a safer food supply; 4) Environmental - Sustainable agriculture operations take measures to protect the environment with the future in mind; 5) Economy - Buying local puts money back into the local economy; 6) Trust - There is comfort in knowing where and from whom your food originates.

Orpha gave a helpful hint, to grate brown sugar if it becomes hard. The minutes were read and treasurer’s report was given by Katherine Tucker. Everyone answered the roll call by telling when they had their last mammogram. Melinda showed a watch she made at the cultural art workshops.

Reports on the use of the building and building maintenance weregiven by Melinda and Nikki Crawley. Bert Ballman gave a report on community day.

Members will be selling tickets for a raffle on a 42 -inch TV to be given away in the near future. If anyone wants to buy tickets, they are available through the members. The quarter package was won by Melinda Crawley.

The meeting was closed with a benediction.
