Decatur Junior High completes season undefeated

— The junior high Bulldogs won their final game of the season against Union Christian, 33-8, on Thursday, leaving them with a perfect 8-0 record.

“It’s nice. (An undefeated season) doesn’t happen very often. It creates a lot of excitement around town and in the school,” said head coach Shane Holland.

Ninth grade quarterback Victor Urquidi scored on the second play of the game and again on the first play of the next possession.

Ninth grade running backs Allen Castenada and Terry Kell both scored on long runs during the first half of the game, making the score 33-0 at half-time.

Castenada intercepted a pass with one secondon the clock before halftime, leaving the ball in Decatur’s possession.

Union Christian scored a touchdown during the second half. The healthy lead gave Decatur’s younger and less-experienced players a chance to have some time on the field, Holland said.

Eleven or 12 of the junior high players will advance to the high school team next year, if they all decide to come out for football, Holland said. With only five graduating seniors, it could boost the senior high team from its current roster of 17 to as many as 25 players.

“We expect to be better next year,” Holland said of the senior high team, which has struggled this year with a record of 1-8.

“We’ll have a lot better grasp of what we’re doing than we did when we started this year,” he said.
