Second pesticide training class scheduled

— County Extension Agent Robert Seay said a second pesticide training class is being offered in December because of overwhelming interest.

The first one on Dec. 1 was filled as soon as it was announced, Seay said.

A second class will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Public Services Building in Bentonville.

“It’s no surprise that producers are concerned about controlling weedsand other pests as they look ahead to 2012,” Seay said. “Obtaining a license to gain access to available pesticide products is just one of many management tools.” The drought of 2010 and 2011 severely reduced forage stands, enabling more weed encroachment, some of which are toxic to livestock. Weed control is one of the most economical practices that producers can use to improve forage production and control toxic situations related to weeds, according to a news release.

For small or large acreageagriculture producers, an RSVP can be made by calling the Benton County Extension Office at 479-271-1060 or email [email protected] . Farm pesticides are tools commonly used to control certain weeds, brush, insects and other pests.

In order to apply restricteduse pesticides, farmers are required to certify through classes sanctioned by the Arkansas State Plant Board, according to the release.

In addition to the pesticide license fee, there will be a $10 class fee per person attending.
