Tickets on sale for dinner theater

— Tickets for the Decatur Assembly of God Church’s annual Christmas dinner theater are now on sale, according to director Aimee Anderson.

The sit-down dinner and theater production will be held at 6 p.m., Dec. 9, 10 and 11, at the church’s new facility on West Main Street.

This year’s melodrama titled “Fool’s Gold” by Melody Jacobson is a tongue-incheek comedy that involves a villain, a hero and an unsuspecting family that has to deal with both of them, according to Anderson. The Western is full of slapstick comedy as the two outlaws try to swindle the family.

The play is not at all religious, Anderson said. Instead, the program is more of a service to the community to allow for some fun and relaxation during a stressful time of year, she explained.

“It’s a time for the community to step back from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and sit down and have some laughs. That’s what it’s all about,” Anderson said.

The cast is made up of 13 church and community members. Cast members are incredibly dedicated and work many long hours to prepare for the play, Anderson said. Practices began in October and continue three times a week until December. Several of the cast members have developed a passion for theater, while others are newcomers who are learning the ropes, she said.

Anderson described the sitdown dinner as “somewhat formal.” Tables, settings andcenterpieces are decorated by the women of the church and the youth volunteer to serve as wait staff. The teenagers look forward to participating each year and “some of the women in our church love decorating the tables as much as being in the play,” Anderson said.

This is the ninth year the church has put on a dinner theater but it will be the first year that the production will be held in the church’s new facility. Tickets are $20 per person and reservations can be made by calling Pam Anderson at 549-7070.
