Junior high Bulldogs continue winning streak

Varsity team falls to Johnson County Westside after taking early lead in Friday's game at Coal Hill

— The junior high Bulldogs remain undefeated, winning Thursday’s home game against Johnson County Westside 41-14.

“We played pretty well,” said head coach Shane Holland.

Early in the second quarter the game was a shut-out, with a score of 35-0. Many of Decatur’s younger players took the field in the second half to gain experience.

Victor Urquidi scored three touchdowns, and his twin brother Mario Urquidi had a punt return for a touchdown.

Allen Castaneda also scored a long touchdown during the game, enabled by Meng Vang’s defensive playing.

“Meng knocked one out on their sideline. He smacked them pretty good,” Holland said.

Kile Shaffer picked up a fumble and scored, for the second time this season.

“This bunch has been pretty fun,” Holland said of the junior high team.

Senior High

The Decatur Bulldogs lost 42-15 to the Johnson County Westside Rebels during Friday’s 1-2A conference game in Coal Hill.

The Rebels improved 2-3 in season play and 2-2 in conference play, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Bulldogs took an early lead, with a score of 15-12 well into the second quarter, but fell behind in the second half.

“We don’t have a lot of substitutes. The kids that were out there played hard,” said head coach Shane Holland.

Sophomore Trey Kell scored two touchdowns during the game. Junior quarterback Evan Owens rushed for 110 yards and played a good game running the ball, Holland said.

Defensively, senior Yuephang Vang - named player of the week - made 15 tackles in his first game to play linebacker. Sophomore Stephen Buckmaster also made 12 tackles during the game.

Junior lineman Avery Clay made a great deal of improvement during the game, with four tackles, Holland said.

The Bulldogs will travel to Conway Christian for a non-conference match on Friday.
