Pioneers fall to Pea Ridge

— The Pioneers knew that they had a good chance for a victory going into Friday’s game against Pea Ridge and were off to a strong start but, unfortunately, they came up short.

“We had a couple of chances to put more points on the board and couldn’t get it done,” wrote Gentry head coach Brian Little in his weekly game summary.

Gentry failed to score just before half to take a potential 14-12 lead at the break.

“We debated on trying a field goal there before half. We knew we were going to get the ball to start the second half, and everyone wanted to go for the touchdown," Little wrote.

The Pioneers made up forthe missed opportunity and started the second half with a three-play scoring drive to make it 14-12.

The defense was able to keep the Blackhawks off the board and Gentry’s offense added another score near the end of the third period, setting the score at 21-12.

The Blackhawks, behind the great running of Dayton Winn, were able to overcome the 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter and score twice, the last coming with less than 2 minutes on the game clock.

“It’s a disappointing loss, no doubt,” Little said. “These kids are fighting with everything they’ve got ... They deserve one.”
