Holland to be new FD chief

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

— Gene Holland will take over as head of the Highfill Volunteer Fire Department on Nov. 1 Chief Jeremy Jackson announced his retirement after 30 years as a firefighter and six years as head of the Highfill department.

Holland is currently the assistant chief and was elected by the firefighters to replace Jackson after his retirement at the close of the month. Jackson brought the firefighters vote to the council, saying that Holland would become chief unless the council overturned their choice.

The only objection was raised by councilwoman Sandy Evans, who said she objected because Jackson had said that Kevin Higgins, when he was offered a position as the town's fire marshal earlier this year would also be well suited to take over the position as chief if he ever retired Evans said she thought the city could save money if Higgins were both fire marshal and fire chief.

Jackson said he is retiring to spend more time with his family and his family farming operation He also called the selection of Holland a good choice, saying Holland was well-qualified to lead the department.
