Junior Bulldogs assured of conference championship

Team wins big on Thursday and is undefeated with only one game left to play in the season, against Union Christian

— The junior Decatur Bulldogs beat the Danville Little Johns 28-6 on Thursday, continuing their winning streak for a 7-0 record.

With one game left in the season, the win ensures the Bulldogs the conference championship. The second closest team in the conference has lost two games, head coach Shane Holland explained. Junior high football teams do not go to playoffs. Instead,champions are figured mathematically.

The Bulldogs kept Danville under control during the first half with a lead of 21-0 until the team scored on a fluke play right before half time.

“They are a pretty good team,” Holland said of the Little Johns, “It was a hard fought game.”

The first possession of the second half the Bulldogs showed how good their defense was by holding Danville from scoring on the four yard line.

The Bulldogs kicked offto Danville in the second half. The Little Johns made it to a first and goal at the 4-yard-line. Decatur’s defense, however, kept the Little Johns out of the end zone.

“I was pretty proud of that,” said Holland.

Ninth grader Tony Mendoza made two interceptions during the game, and ninth grader Allen Castenada had a long pass reception and several tackles.

The Bulldogs will face Union Christian at home on Thursday for the last game of the season.
