— The Pioneers opened their season at Colcord, Okla., on Thursday night with a 6 point loss to the Hornets.

“We spotted them 6 points and an extra possession when they started the game by recovering an on-side kick ... they caught us off guard,” Gentry head coach Brian Little said in his football newsletter. “Gentry overcame that deficit to take a 9-6 halftime lead despite turning the ball over.”

The teams swapped a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter with the Pioneers on top 15-13 after three. The fourth quarter yielded only one touchdown, favoring the Hornets, to set the final score at 21-15 after a successful 2-point try.

“We just couldn’t get their offense off the field. Theydid a good job of grinding it out on the ground and using the clock,” Little wrote.

Gentry’s two touchdowns came on passes from Dylan Ochs to Tanner Coy - both point attempts after the touchdowns failed.

Coy scored the other 3 points on a 19-yard field goal.

Gentry will host Charleston on Friday night at 7 p.m. The seventh grade and junior high Pioneers will play at Charleston on Thursday night at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Pioneer Football has two new coaches on the sideline this year. Beau Collins joins the staff as an offensive and defensive line coach. Blake Rhein provides coaching for defensive backs and receivers, as well as for kickers and punters. Alison Moore is the team’s new athletic trainer.
