Fly Fishing Tourney to be held at Decatur anglers' club

— On Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 1, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will benefit from an inaugural event: the Spring Valley Redbone Fly Fishing Invitational.

It is a two-person team event held at Spring Valley Anglers, a private hunting and fishing club near Decatur in Benton County. The event features professionally guided catchand-release fly fishing for trout.

After the fishing event concludes at 7 p.m., an awards dinner and a silent auction will be held at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, the home of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.

“It’s basically set up for beginners,” says Brent La-Roche, the co-chairman of the fishing event. “If you’ve ever had an interest in flyfishing, this would be a great opportunity to get two days out there with a trained guide. I’d say 75 to 80 percent of the people [in the event] are amateur fly fisherman and have fished at most once or two times.”

The invitational will become part of the Redbone@Large, a tournament series which since 1988 has been hosting fishing events to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Events are held throughout the year in the United States, Mexico and the Bahamas and, in 2009 alone, the events raised $1.5 million for the national foundation.
