Lincoln defeats Junior Pioneers

— Lincoln captured a turnover on the opening series by Gentry and converted it into points. Lane Maddox’s block of a Gentry punt after the Pioneers could not make a first down on the game’s first possession was the difference maker. Lincoln won 14-0 in what Wolves’ coach Brad Harris described as a slugfest last Thursday.

“Gentry is a good ballclub,” Harris said. “That was defensive struggle.”

Both defenses dominated the game but Gentry was handicapped by the blocked punt. Lincoln took over at the Pioneers’ 33-yardline and scored on their first play. Drew Harris threw to Gustavo Rojas for the touchdown then kicked the extra-point for Lincoln.

The score remained 7-0 in favor of Lincoln until Rojas picked off a Gentry pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Once more, he kicked the extra-point, pushing the Wolves to a two touchdown cushion.

“We scored early and were able to hold on,” Harris said. “Our defense played great. To shut that team out is an accomplishment. They were big and physical.”

Gentry won the seventh grade game 22-6.
