E.H. Club provides helpful household hints

After a delicious lunch hosted by Orpha Wardlaw, the September meeting of the Maysville E. H. Club was called to order by the president. Melinda Crawley led the group singing The Yellow Rose of Texas which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Melinda read a poem entitled We’ll Never Know.

Jewel Crawley gave a very informative lesson on the care of houseplants. There are several benefits from having house plants. First they keep us in touch with nature and provide a pleasant environment. It’s a great hobby and gives one a lot of pleasure as well as being beneficial to our health.

There are five factors that are essential for healthy plants - light, temperature, nutrition, soil and water. All these affect the way a plant thrives. Plants are prone to have diseases and insects; therefore they need to be cleaned and groomed periodically. There are products on the market for this but a few drops of detergent in water works well. Newly purchased plants need to be examined to make sure they do not have insects which could transfer to house plants you already have.

Helpful hints were given: To prevent cookies from spreading sprinkle flour on a greased cookie sheet. To make measuring soda easier put it in an empty baking powder can. Tape over the can and mark it as soda. Baking powder cans are made with a place to level the powder.
