New marker, old site

Just across the state line north of Maysville, in Oklahoma, a new roadside marker was placed marking the approximate location of Fort Wayne, a U.S. Army Fort establishished in 1839 and abandoned in 1842.

The old fort was the site of a Confederate Army post, established in 1861 by Col. Stand Watie who organized the Cherokee Mounted Rifles. His troops were captured in the Oct. 22, 1862, Battle of Fort Wayne.
