GENTRY — Chris Wiand was a tough-luck loser March 27 as Gentry lost its 4A-1 Conference opener to Farmington.
Gentry jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but a pair of critical errors by the Pioneers in the third inning openedthe door for the Cardinals in a 5-3 victory.
Wiand gave up eight hits, but four came in the third inning as a pair of errors in the outfield allowed the Cardinals to send nine batters to the plate. An error in the fifth allowed Farmington to score its final run.
Wiand struck out two and only gave up two hits after the third in going the distance. Wiand also had a single and he walked and scored in the Gentry first.
A week before, Wiand was credited with the win in the Pioneers 6-4 win against Booneville at a tournament in Ozark.
