Pioneers beat Elks, fall to Tigers

— With Nelson Watson and later Josh Sewell on the mound, the Gentry Pioneers held the visiting Elks of Elkins to six hits and three runs to win Friday’s game 11-3.

The Pioneers answered an Elkins run in the top of the first with two batters crossingthe plate in the bottom of the inning. Though Elkins tied the game at two apiece in the top of the second, Gentry put four on the board in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth. Elkins’ hopes died in the top of the seventh when they were only able to put a single runner across the plate.

Tristan Glass batted.750 in the game with three hits and two RBIs. Watson, Tanner Coy and Austin Cochran each had two hits. Coy had a triple in the game. Gentry had a total of 14 hits.

Watson was the starting pitcher, but Sewell picked up the win. Watson threw 47 pitches in the game and had one strikeout. Sewell threw 39 pitches and struck out three.

Gentry 1 Prairie Grove 2

In a defensive battle Thursday, Gentry lost, 2-1, when they faced the Tigers in Prairie Grove.

The game remained scoreless through 4 1/2 innings, with Prairie Grove picking up its first run in the bottom of the fifth. Gentry answered with a run in the top of the sixth, but PrairieGrove retook the lead by putting another runner across the plate in the sixth.

Gentry had four hits to Prairie Grove’s seven. Kolby Rankin was the only Pioneer to cross the plate.

Chris Wiand started the game, throwing 65 pitches. He was relieved by Coy, who threw another 42. Coy received the loss. Each struck outthree. Coy also walked three.

Tanner Coy leads the Pioneers in batting for the season, having played in all 19 games and maintaining a .511 batting average. Kolby Rankin played in 16 games and has a .478. The team overall is batting .330.

The Pioneers next play at home against Ozark at 4:30 p.m., today.
