— The Decatur School District is seeking volunteers for the Zone 1 school board position, according to superintendent Larry Ben.

The position was vacated when Justin Thompson submitted his resignation at the April 16 board meeting. His resignation letter stated that he was unable to fulfill duties because of his work schedule.

Interested persons are asked to submit a letter stating why they would like to serve on the school board. Applicants must reside in the school district and preference will be given to those who live in Zone 1.

To be eligible for a school board position, candidates must be a qualified voter residing in the school district, according to the Arkansas School Board Association website www.arsba. org.

The appointed school board member will serve until the next election, when he or she may run for the position if he or she lives in Zone 1.

School board members may not be employees of the district, but having a spouse or family memberemployed by the district does not disqualify prospective candidates, the website states.

Letters of interest must be turned in to the school administration office by May 15, Ben said, so they can be considered at the May 21 school board meeting.
