Summer reading plans told

Reading contest to be part of Decatur's summer reading program

— The Iva Jane Peek Library in Decatur will be holding a reading contest, as well as a traditional summer reading program, to encourage kids to develop a love for books.

Children can register for the summer reading contest at the library and then keep a log of all the books they read between June 1 and July 31. Thecontest will be divided into three age groups: ages 6-7, 8-9 and 10-11. Parents will be required to sign the book log, which must be turned in by July 31.

The library will hold a party for participants on Aug. 7 to celebrate a summer of reading fun. The child that reads the most books in each age group will win a Barnes & Noble gift card.

The library summer reading program willbe held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays, starting June 4. The program, for ages 6 -11, will include story reading, a craft project and a snack.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said librarian Karen Jones. “I’m excited about it.”
