Decatur falls to Kingston

— The Kingston Yellowjackets overcame the Decatur Bulldogs to win, 40-23, in a non-conference game here last Friday.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead very early in the game, but by the end of the first quarter Kingston had an 8 point lead. The Bulldogs almost caught up in the second quarter for a half-time score of 16-14.

By the end of the third quarter, the Yellowjackets had widened the gap to 29-21, before gaining 11 more points in the fourth quarter.

“I think the guys were disappointed with their effort. They learned a good lesson - you got to show up and play the game, not just show up and win,” said John Unger, Decatur coach and athletic director.

Kingston was a wellcoached team and shot a lot of lay-ups, while Decatur took chances on 17-foot jump shots, he said.

“We still have some growing up to do. I wouldn’t say losses are good, but they do teach you some things,” Unger said.

The Bulldogs will compete in the Adair, Okla .,tournament this week. Next week, on Dec. 10, they will face the Oaks-Mission Warriors at Oaks, Okla., followed by a home game against the Watts, Okla., Engineers on Dec. 11.

Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs lost their non-conference game against the Kingston Yellowjackets, 61-22, on Friday.

Decatur coach Bill Niven described the Yellowjackets as a well-conditioned, very good defensive team. The players have years of experience and the team has already played about 16 games this season, he said.

The Yellowjackets used the 1-3-1 defense, which is very effective if a team has enough players, Niven said.

“They’ve got the kind of program that guys like us are working toward,” Niven said.

Decatur has some girls that worked hard and played pretty well.

I can’t fault the effort,” Niven said.

The Lady Bulldogs will also be competing this week in the Adair (Okla.) tournament. Next week they will face the Oaks-Mission Warriors in Oaks, Okla., on Dec. 10 and the Watts, Okla., Engineers at home on Dec. 11.
