Board approves purchases, hears athletic reports

— Four Gravette High School classrooms are to be equipped with new tables and chairs, the result of action by the Gravette School board at its most recent regular meeting.

Also approved for the four classrooms was the purchase of 120 iPages and four MacBooks. Both projects are funded through a special federal fund program.

The board also outlined the District Facilities Master Plan for 2012 for the board. This includes projects previously reported in the Eagle Observer involving removing the east-west wing of the old high school and constructing a new addition to the middle school complex.

Also in the plan is construction of new baseball and softball fields at the high school campus.

High school principal Jo Ellen Hastings brought the board up-to-date on a Project Learning Based Model.

The board approved a new position, paraprofessional for special education, for the Gravette Upper Elementary School. The position will be funded with Title VI-B money.

At an earlier meeting the board hired Kevin Smith as director of instructional technologies for School District 20.

Athletic Reports

Robin Cannon, girls’ volleyball coach, described the recent season which saw the Lady Lions qualify for state, where they won their first gamebefore dropping a hardfought decision to defending champion Valley View.

Shelby Frey, setter, and Monica White, middle hitter, were named to the all-state team. Frey is a senior and White a junior at GHS.

Both were named to the all-conference team and were joined by Shyanne Nichols, a senior, who was outside hitter on the Lady Lions squad.

Bill Harrelson, head football coach, recapped the Lions successful season in which the team won its first two games in state playoff action but lost in the quarterfinals. Two players, Derrick Strzelecki and Jeremy McGarrah, earned allstate honors. Ten Lions were tapped for all-conference recognition.
