— A $219,000 grant was awarded Sulphur Springs for improvements and maintenance on that city’s water and sewer facilities.

Sulphur Springs mayor Bob Simon was in Little Rock recently where the announcement and presentation was made by Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe.

Simon said the funds are from the Arkansas Environmental Development Commission and will beused for several needed upgrades for the Sulphur Springs utilities.

Repairing and painting the town’s two water towers will cost an estimated $100,000, Simon said. The balance will be for maintenance of the systems and replacing equipment at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

The mayor said water superintendent Sherman Buckley deserves a great deal of praise for keeping the sewer plant functioning in spite of old equipment.

“Many times he put in up to 16-18 hour days,” Simon said.

Simon also said credit for receiving the grant goes to Cassie Elliott, who wrote the grant application. Freedom David, the water/sewer department bookkeeper, and Tami Comstock, city recorder and treasurer, deserve special thanks for their loyal service to the city.

“I want to personally thank all of those I’ve mentioned for the good work they have done,” the mayor said.
