Planning commission could be abolished

— After hearing reports from the various city departments and committees, the city council last Monday night turned to several items of business for discussion.

The Committee of the Whole meeting involved discussion only and no official actions were taken.

Discussed eliminating the City Planning Commission and assigning those duties to the entire citycouncil. This will require passing an ordinance dissolving the commission with appropriate council enforcement powers.

Discussed establishing a volunteer Advisory Committee to help the city establish priorities in building and development for the future.

Discussed banking options with the plan to utilize services of both the Bank of Gravett and Arvest Bank.

Discussed water tower maintenance, painting andrepair, a project that has been under consideration for several months.

Heard a report concerning extending sewer service east of Stagecoach Road along Highway 72.

Discussed creating a volunteer committee to assist with city beautification with emphasis on Hillcrest Cemetery property.

Among department and commission reports was the reviewing of bids for extending and paving the walking trail in Pop Allum Park. Action may be takenat the January council meeting.

Heard routine reports from the streets and utilities departments, the police and fire departments and the public library.

The library report showed that 20,129 patrons were served during 2011, that 797 new patrons have become members using the library, that computers were used almost 4,000 hours by citizens and that the library deposited $30,422 in funds which included grants and fundraiser revenue.
