— The Decatur Bulldogs celebrated basketball colors day on Friday with a pep rally, games and contests followed by coronation, senior high basketball games against the Hackett Hornets and a dance.

Senior maid Carlene Vargas was crowned colors day queen and junior Evan Owens was named colors day captain.

The Bulldogs lost the ensuing conference game against the Hackett Hornets, 33-21.

“The last game we didn’t come to play. We weren’t physical enough and a little timid,” Decatur’s head basketball coach John Unger said.

The team did a good job defensively during thefirst half but only scored seven points. During the second half the team ran a lot of sets offensively and got some good looks at the basket but didn’t catch up.

“The game of basketball is about momentum and we couldn’t get that momentum. A lot of this has to do with being a young team,” Unger said.

The Bulldogs started two freshmen, along with sophomores and seniors. In comparison, the Hornets started five seniors. Even though his team may be young, Unger doesn’t accept it as an excuse. He said he is proud that his team has been competitive in the games they’ve played.

“We want to get a win, we want to be successful and we’re striving for that,” Unger said.

The Lady Bulldogs lost Friday's conference game against the Hackett Hornets, 55-22.

Decatur coach Larry Claphan said the team has been making improvement and commented that Jessica Segovia and Lacy Barrett in particular have been stepping up their rebounding.

“I’m really impressed with their play. Jessica has really come a long way,” Claphan said.

Rebounding is key for the girls team since the girls don’t have a lot of height or size, he said. Mathematically, the team’s shooting average of 29 percent is workable, but they need to shoot more often and cut down the turnover ratios, Claphan explained.

“It’s a numbers thing. We’re improving on that ina sense but we’ve got a way to go,” he said.

Oaks Mission Game

The Bulldogs lost 49-43 to the Oaks-Mission Warriors during a non-conference game last Monday.

The Bulldogs had a 10-point lead at half time but the Warriors pulled away in the second half.

Decatur was hurt by foul trouble and by missing shots, according to Decatur’s head basketball coach John Unger.

Junior Dakota Pitcher and freshman Victor Urquidi both scored 11 points in the game. Victor Urquidi also made nine rebounds and had four steals.

Freshman Mario Urquidi had eight points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Dakota Pitcher had 11 points and Trey Kell had eight points.
