A SECOND OPINION: I'm grateful for a local swimming pool

— Triple-digit temperatures and bored kids make me grateful for a local swimming pool.

I’m thankful that Decatur and Gravette city officials have worked to keep their public swimming pools open for the past two summers after budget and maintenance problems closed both pools during the summer of 2010.

I know that Decatur’s city council struggled with the decision of whether or not to open the pool this summer because of budget concerns, but I’m very glad they decided to keep it open.

And judging by the attendance the last two times I visited the pool, I’m not the only one who has been enjoying it.There were quite a few more children and adults at the swimming pool than I remember in years past.

While the Decatur pool has historically lost money, a new Americans with Disabilities Act regulation that requires all public pools to have a wheel chair lift caused council members more financial concern.

At first it was estimated the lift would cost $6,000 to $7,000. Mayor Charles Linam was able to whittle away at the costs, finding a less expensive stationary lift and applying for a grant to pay for $3,000 of the costs. Then Decatur business Ocean, Pools and Spas offered a lift at cost, making it even more affordable.

A number of community members also signed petitions to keep the pool open.

The council moved to open the pool by a 4 to 2 vote. It made a difficult decision, but one that I think will make the community a better place to live.

Trained lifeguards and controlled water quality are a clear advantage of public swimming pools. I cringe when I see young children swimming in Crystal Lake, especially after the recent drowning there.

Provided with a safe environment, swimming is a healthy way to get active and exercise, and it makes for lots of happy childhood memories as well.
