Library receives computer systems to help visually impaired patrons

— Two new computer systems to aid the visually impaired have been installed at the Gravette Public Library.

The systems, known as “Magnisight” and “Zoom Tax” offer different types of assistance for persons who may benefit from their use, said Kim Schneider, library director.

The “Magnisight” system does just that: it magnifies print from books or other printed items or objects to a visual screen, enlarging the type or image for viewing. The amount of enlargement can be varied depending on what the user requires.

Schneider is shown in the accompanying photo which demonstrates how the printed page of a book is enlarged on the monitor.

In the other photo, Schneider demonstrates the “Zoom Tex” computer which provides a special service for persons who may be totally blind.

It operates with a regular computer keyboard in which the machine not only displays the typed words but also orally reads the script as the person types the document.

This allows the user to listen and follow the progress of the document. When completed, the entire document is read aloud for editing.

Schneider said the machines were donated by Gail Davis, an Air Force veteran who lives in Prairie Grove.

Mr. Davis, who is visually impaired, recently received upgraded devices for his use and chose the Gravette library to receive the computer systems.
