Wednesday, June 13, 2012

— Making plans to better promote recycling, preserve landfill space and reduce waste, as well as crafting community pride, were topics at the meeting of a miniadvisory committee being formed in Gravette.

The group met with Louise Mann, who works for the Benton County Solid Waste District and is organizing efforts in the county to promote the importance of working together to preserve the environment that we enjoy today so that it may be enjoyed by further generations.

Persons attending the session were Allyson Ransom, Kristen DeWitt, Zane Vanderpool, Dorothy Hadley, Bryan Johnson, Ken Foxx and Dodie Evans.

Mann stressed that building on the present recycling program of the city will be a thrust of the committee, which initiallywill compile an information sheet and conduct a community-wide survey.

Developing a community-wide network to provide education and support, particularly through the school, churches and organizations, is a major goal.

Developing the program in the elementaryschool is expected to be a priority during the next school year. Zane Vanderpool, a committee member, is principal of the Glenn Duffy Elementary School. Another educator is Dorothy Hadley, parent involvement coordinator. Involvement by other educators at all levels is being encouraged.

The program is initially being coordinated through Ransom, communications director for the city. The group meets monthly for about an hour.
