Two Gravette Middle School students win engineering award

— Two Gravette Middle School students combined their talents in an engineering design contest to take first place in competition with students from throughout Arkansas.

Eighth grade student Spencer Heald, who had won first place in the annual competition in 2010and 2011, teamed with fellow eighth grader Caleb Velez to win this year’s Industrial Engineering Challenge, held at the University of Arkansas in mid-April.

The duo used a computer, with emphasis on engineering mathematics required in building design concepts, to design and develop a building that most efficiently utilizes engineering requirements for the structure.

They submitted a comprehensive essay outlining their findings and then personally gave an impressive PowerPoint presentation to judges, explaining and demonstrating their findings.

The annual competition is to acquaint and inspire students with the importance of mathematics in industrial design.
