Board approves some school-choice applicants

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

— The Gravette School Board Monday evening accepted applications from nine Bentonville students to attend classes in Gravette this fall.

The applications had been received through Friday, June 8, which preceded a judicial ruling that the Arkansas School Choice Act is deemed unconstitutional.

No action was taken on three applications received following that date.

Seventeen applicants had received board approval at earlier meetings, which brings the total to 26.

But these 26 students are now in limbo, pending an appeal of the judicial ruling which is affecting school districts throughout the state. The Arkansas Department of Education is expected to issue a ruling for districts sometime in the near future.

The almost-two-hour session involved approving numerous almost-routine items which require annual board approval.

One important action of the board was to approve applying to the State Department of Education to issue $1,500,000 in bonds, a part of the financial package for the middle school and ball fields construction projects. The action approved First SecurityBeardsley Public Finance as fiscal agent, and authorized the superintendent to accept/reject the bid result.

The board also approved $4,256,181 as the maximum price for the two projects as submitted by Nabholz Construction Co.
