Vacant school board post filled

Amy Brooks appointed to Zone 1 position at Monday's meeting

— Amy Brooks was appointed to fill the open Zone 1 Decatur School Board position at Monday’s meeting.

The Zone 1 seat was left open when Justin Thompson resigned in April. While Brooks does not live in Zone 1, she is eligible for the position because she lives in the Decatur School District, superintendent Larry Ben said.

Ben explained that the board would have preferred to find someone who lived in Zone 1 to fill the opening; but after two months of searching, a willing candidate could not be found.

The Zone 1 office will be up for election in September. If no one runs for the position, Brooks will continue on as the Zone 1 board member, Ben said. She would also have the option of running for the Zone 4 school board seat, currently held by Darleen Holly, when it comes up for election.

Brooks is a lifelongresident of Decatur and a graduate of Decatur Schools. She is employed at the Decatur State Bank and served as the Chamber of Commerce treasurer for a number of years.

School board members Ike Owens, Darleen Holly and Kevin Smith voted to appoint Brooks to the position. Board member Aaron Owens was not present.

The school board will meet again at 7 p.m., July 16. The board will meet for a study and goal-setting session at 5:30 p.m., before the board meeting.
