'Renaissance Faire' coming

— Area children and their families are invited to attend a free Renaissance Faire in Gravette Old Town Park this Friday, June 29, from 9 a.m. until noon.

The “faire” is sponsored by the Gravette Public Library and the Bank of Gravett, replacing the annual children’s summer reading program which has been held in previous years.

Kim Schneider, library director, said, “Instead of focusing on just a few children at the library, we want to make our summer activities for the whole family. There will be events of interest for all age groups.”

The authentically costumed participants conducting the faire havebeen involved with similar programs in Kansas City, Bonner Springs, Kans., and Oklahoma City. Children and their parents are being encouraged to dress up in costume to add to the festivities.

The actors will perform songs and dances, sword fighting and archery and will display period crafts, including basketry. Information on coats of arms will be available, and door prizes will be awarded. A jousting performance, with horses, had to be canceled unexpectedly.

Schneider said it is hoped attendance will be good, which could lead to an even bigger program next year.

Please call the library, 787-5955, with your plans to attend so that ample planning for the free event can be completed.
