— Decatur’s track program has enjoyed a lot of success this year, winning the boys’ junior high district championship and placing second in the boys’ senior high district championship.

The senior high girls’ team also did well at the district meet, placing third.

Seven senior high boys and three girls have qualified to compete in the 2A conference state championship track meet, to be held today in Mineral Springs.

Ninth grader Mario Urquidi, who competes on both the junior and senior high team, won the title of high-point individual at the senior high district meet.

“They did very well; I was proud of them,” said coach Shane Holland.

The junior high boys’ track team won the district championship held last Tuesday in Fort Smith. Team members Mario Urquidi and Victor Urquidi also tied for first place in individual points at the meet, and Mario Urquidi broke the district record for the high jump, jumping 5-9. The junior high girls’ track team placed third overall in the district meet, and won three individual championships.

“The thing I was proudest of - to score that many points, you have to make sacrifices and do things,” Holland said. “Those guys have bought into the team concept of the sport, and that’s fun.”
