Election disappointment runs deeper than the candidates chosen

Perhaps you were asked, too, for your opinion regarding the results of last week’s national election. I have to admit disappointment - at first over the results themselves and then over what those results say about our nation and people.

When I went to bed on election night and votes were still being tallied, the presidential race appeared close - a lot closer than I expected - with Romney in the lead. When I woke up early, early on Wednesday morning and let Mrs. Griz know I would not be upset with her if she turned on the TV in the bedroom instead of the living room on this post-election morning, she told me she was sick to her stomach and that nothing had really changed in the makeup of the federal government.

Apparently, the implications of last Tuesday’s election kept her awake long enough to find out the results, and the results were displeasing enough to make her feel sick at her stomach. I think I can understand that too.

At first, the results troubled me because I fear current government policies are leading to the ruin of our nation economically and morally; but then I started thinking about how it is we have come to this point, and that troubles me even more.

And, so, what do I think about the election results? Aside from my disappointment with the choices onthe ballot and in the apparent choices of the American people, the election results reveal more about the people of this nation than the candidates they elected.

Yes, we have chosen to continue down the road to financial ruin and aren’t really willing to do more than talk about reducing deficit spending while the debt and its burden continue to grow beyond imagination. It all makes me wonder if we’ll survive till the next election Perhaps I should start studying Chinese before our debts are called in and it becomes the official language.

But of greatest concern and the most frightening, is that the majority of “we the people” no longer hold to fundamental moral values - at least they aren’t important enough to influence our choice in leaders. Apparently, the life of the unborn is not sacred and worthy of protection, marriage between one man and one woman is on the way out honesty and fiscal responsibility counts for little, and God and the moral absolutes upon which our nation and its laws were established have been voted out - perhaps many elections ago.

As a Bible-believing Christian, I can see the handwriting on the wall even though our nation’s elected officials apparently don’t see it or can’t understand it. Judgment is coming. All that remains to be seen is the how and the when.

I’ve heard some suggest we pray daily for the president because, if anything happened to him, look who’s next in line. After watching the vice presidential candidates debate, I can sympathize.

But I have a better suggestion and something I intend to do. I believe we Christians need to pray daily for our president that he learn who Jesus Christ really was and is and what it means to be a Christian; and pray that he learn to govern, guided by the principles of God’s Word and not by humanistic philosophies and opinion polls. Of course, the same applies regarding our prayers for other government officials.

St. Paul wrote to Timothy (1 Tim. 2:1-6): “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.”

And, since the election revealed a lot about our character as a people - especially, our disregard for God and His Word - now is certainly the time to begin and continue praying for our people and nation that God would have mercy upon us and bring us to a knowledge of the truth rather than to the judgment we deserve.
