Bulldogs win first games

— The Bulldogs won both their basketball games last week to start the season with a strong 2-0 record.

Decatur defeated the Oaks (Okla.) Warriors 46-35 at a home game on Friday.

“We actually played really well. We’re still getting used to playing basketball,” Unger said.

The team is way ahead of where they were this time last year and has more depth to wear their opponents down. Overall, the team did a good job of rebounding, controlling the game and the tempo and playing as a team, he said.

Senior Evan Owens made two steals and converted them into easy baskets.

The Urquidi twins, Mario and Victor, both scored 10 points in the game. Decatur also had the advantage of height, with players such as Avery Clay, Mario Urquidi, Josh Hare and Andrew Harris.

The Bulldogs won their game against the Watts Engineers 49-45 last Thursday.

Watts jumped to an early lead and was ahead nine points by half time, however the Bulldogs came back to outscore them 16 to 5 in the fourth quarter.

Twin brothers Mario and Victor Urquidi both did well in the game, scoring 13 and 12 points respectively, according to head coach and athletic director John Unger.

Senior Evan Owens made two free throws to seal the win.

“Evan played a great game defensively and Mario had four or five good blocks,” Unger said.

The team was still transitioning from football to basketball, and the game was rough in some aspects, Unger said.

“I was pleased with the effort. We just want to build on it,” he said.

The Bulldogs faced Haas Hall Academy at home on Tuesday, after press time.
